10 Shopping Hacks to Fall for This Autumn

Fall is here — complete with crisp air, pumpkin-spiced everything and some of the best shopping of the year. Grab a sweater, pour yourself a cup of cider and check out these fall shopping hacks to make the most of the season.

1. Shop end-of-season summer clearance

As summer winds down, retailers are eager to clear out tank tops, swimwear, patio furniture and grills. Stores like Target, Walmart and other chains slash prices by up to 70% in September.

2. Buy in-season produce at farmer’s markets

Fall is harvest time! Farmer’s markets are brimming with affordable, fresh produce like apples, squash, sweet potatoes and pumpkins. Prices are often lower than grocery stores, especially later in the day.

3. Time your clothing purchases

Retailers release fall collections in early September at full price, but markdowns typically hit by mid-to-late October. If you can hold off on that new jacket or pair of boots, you’ll find deeper discounts and clearance options — just in time for cooler temps.

4. Shop big for small appliances

With college move-ins over and holiday sales approaching, stores start marking down air fryers, blenders, coffee makers and more in the fall. October is especially good for buying these items on sale before Black Friday crowds hit.

5. Snag outdoor gear at a discount

Camping, hiking and outdoor sports gear often go on sale in fall, as retailers try to clear space for winter inventory. Look for deals on tents, sleeping bags, backpacks and bikes.

6. Use price-tracking tools

Apps and websites like Honey, Rakuten and CamelCamelCamel can help you track price drops and apply coupon codes.

7. Take advantage of loyalty perks and flash sales

As competition for your holiday dollar heats up, retailers often offer flash sales or bonus loyalty rewards in the fall. Sign up for your favorite stores’ newsletters or apps. They’ll often alert you to short-term markdowns, member-only events, or early Black Friday previews.

8. Buy Halloween supplies early (or very late)

Halloween décor, costumes and candy hit shelves early in September, and prices rise closer to Oct. 31. Shop early for the best selection and use coupons from places like Party City. If you can wait until Nov. 1, you’ll find spooky markdowns at 50–90% off — great for next year’s stash.
